Founded in 2019 by Craig Allison and Rory Smith, who between them bring together a wealth of talent and experience. Craig spent several years bartending worldwide and now heads up operations, and Rory leads on the distilling side. Recently voted Best New Distillery of the Year by the Gin Guide is proof that these two are shaking things up.

The name Gyre & Gimble references the Jabberwocky nonsense poem and loosely translates as “to do something strange”. The pair want to be creating innovative spirits, and their three gins were all industry firsts at their time of release.

If you’re not familiar with Gyre & Gimble’s range, they make a Coastal gin, Cherry gin and a classic Double Juniper London Dry. It’s not just about gin as they also make a Sea-Salted vodka and have both a Limoncello and Coffee liqueur on the horizon. Everything produced so far has won Gold at the IWSC, gaining an impressive 92/93 points.

Gyre & Gimble

Sustainability lies at the heart of their ethos, from packaging to sourcing ingredients.

Their Coastal gin is the flagship, outselling other products three to one. It was recently voted UK Best Contemporary Gin 2022 at the World Gin Awards. Distilled with foraged samphire, dulce seaweed and lavender from the Norfolk coast with the addition of a unique twist – a small amount of saltwater in the dilution.

Sustainability lies at the heart of their ethos, from packaging to sourcing ingredients. They forage what they can and, where possible, they always buy locally. They’ve recently partnered with a local company that would typically discard orange peel as an unwanted by-product – at Gyre & Gimble, that orange peel becomes an essential part of the distillation process.

Craig and Rory are great believers in brand loyalty. Having spent many years on the other side of the bar, they understand hospitality and bar support, offering everything from bespoke menu creation and print to glassware and entire staff training. They also love to do tasting collaborations with kitchens, adding an interactive and experiential feel.

The future looks positive for Gyre & Gimble with imminent distillery expansion plans. This summer, they launch their new gin academy and shop in Norwich’s iconic Royal Arcade. The new venue will also become a training site for bar teams.

With accounts as far north as Aberdeen and as far south as Exeter, these two are passionate about what they do. They are continuously developing their product portfolio, adding more weird and wonderful drinks to the range. They love to collaborate, and later this year will be releasing their first wine…watch this space!
